Careers with Talisman

Principal Scientist - Alzheimer’s disease drug discovery

We are currently seeking to recruit a Principal Scientist to join our expanding team. The successful candidate will lead a group of research scientists, and play a key role in the design, delivery and management of a number of exciting preclinical research projects focussed on the cell and molecular biology of neurodegeneration.

The ideal candidate will combine ongoing engagement with active bench research with team leadership. In addition to directing a research group, practical tasks include working with human stem cell models of neurodegeneration and neurological disease to deliver drug discovery projects, including novel target identification and validation, and whole genome and small molecule phenotypic screens. Candidates must be able to work independently, be collaborative and collegiate, and demonstrate a proven track record of team leadership in a research environment.

Key areas of responsibility:

•   Research team leadership;
•   Design and management of research projects (internal and collaborative);
•   Design and execution of experimental work and subsequent analysis to support drug discovery and pathway validation in human stem cell systems;
•   Effective communication of findings (verbal and written).

Essential skills and qualifications:

Essential qualifications are a minimum of a 2.1 class honours degree in the biological sciences and a PhD in the biological or physical sciences. Essential skills include advanced hands-on expertise in at least one of: molecular/cell biology, cell culture, neuroscience or neurodegeneration research. It is also desirable for the successful candidate to have experience in supervising and leading the research of junior colleagues. We require a minimum of three years postdoctoral research experience in academic and/or commercial settings.

The role will be based at the Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge. We can offer the successful candidate excellent benefits and remuneration. Salary will be in the region of £38,000-£48,000 depending on experience. Post-doctoral Scientist - Alzheimer’s disease drug discovery in human stem cell systems

We are currently seeking to recruit an ambitious, enthusiastic, PhD-level scientist to join our expanding team. The role will involve the delivery of a number of different research projects in the area of the cell and molecular biology of neurodegeneration, with a focus on target identification and validation for drug discovery. The position provides an exciting opportunity to work in and develop skills in cutting-edge technologies, including stem cell models of dementia.

The successful candidate will be responsible for running molecular and cell biology experiments, using proprietary human iPS cell models of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Extensive training will be provided for the successful applicant. Candidates must be collaborative, collegiate, ambitious and be able to demonstrate proven research ability.

Key areas of responsibility:

•   Cell and molecular biology research in neurodegeneration for drug discovery and pathway validation in human stem cell systems;
•   Phenotypic screens in human stem cell models of dementia (CRISPR and small molecule);
•   Generation of human neurons and neural networks from iPS cells;
•   Core laboratory maintenance duties.

Essential skills and qualifications:

Essential qualifications are a minimum of a 2.1 class honours degree in in the biological sciences and a PhD in the biological or physical sciences. Essential skills include hands-on skills in one of: cell culture, neuroscience, electrophysiology or neurodegeneration research. It is also desirable for the successful candidate to have knowledge of molecular biology and/or biochemistry and/or another relevant cell-based assay experience. Recent PhD graduates are encouraged to apply.

The role will be based at the Talisman research labs, on the Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge. We can offer the successful candidate excellent benefits and remuneration. Salary will be in the region of £28,000.
